Undergraduate - Lifetime Academic Advisor System
Sogang has maintained an undergraduate advising system since the Class of 1996. Before declaring a major, students are assigned an advisor within their undergraduate division; once their major is confirmed, they are paired with a faculty advisor from that department. This system is intended to offer continuous support during a student’s time at the university and even after graduation, fostering a long-term advising relationship and strengthening the connection between faculty and students.
Purpose
- Shift the concept of student advising from a temporary, enrollment-only model to a lifelong guidance system, establishing Sogang’s distinctive faculty–student advising structure.
- When completing multiple majors, the “other required credits” category includes credits from the additional major as well as common foundational requirements.
- Move beyond the narrow, department-centered scope of traditional major-based advising, and broaden the advising framework so that both faculty and students can think of their academic affiliation in smaller units (the undergraduate division) and larger units (the university as a whole).
- Expand the advisor’s role from offering guidance primarily on academic and administrative matters to providing comprehensive advice that also covers career planning, employment, personal concerns, and other aspects of student life.
